What is Flat Betting?

Learn how flat betting uses a consistent stake, why it helps control risk and when a percentage-based unit is more practical.

Definition

Flat betting means staking the same amount, or the same percentage of your bankroll, on every selection.

Why it is useful

A consistent stake limits emotional decisions, makes performance easier to measure and prevents one losing bet from damaging the bankroll disproportionately.

Fixed amount or fixed percentage

A fixed amount is simple but does not adapt as the bankroll changes. A fixed percentage, such as one unit equal to 1% of bankroll, scales exposure gradually.

Advantages and limitations

Flat betting is robust and transparent, but it does not allocate more capital to stronger edges. That trade-off is often worthwhile for bettors whose probability estimates are still developing.
