What is a Steam Move?
Understand steam moves in betting markets, why prices shift quickly across bookmakers and why following them blindly is risky.
Definition
A steam move is a fast, coordinated price move across several bookmakers, often caused by respected money or important new information entering the market.
How it looks
The same selection shortens at multiple firms within a short window. Handicap or totals lines may also move, for example from over 2.5 to over 2.75.
Common causes
Confirmed line-ups, injuries, weather, scheduling news, model-driven syndicate bets and a market correction can all trigger rapid movement.
Why late followers can lose value
Once the price has moved, the original edge may be gone. Chasing a worse number can turn a positive-EV position into a neutral or negative one.
Use steam as a prompt to investigate
Check the source of the move, compare books and reassess your probability. Treat the move as information to analyse, not an automatic betting signal.
